How to Make Annual Reviews More Effective and Engaging for Your Team

As a leader, I’ve often found that standard annual corporate evaluations lack the depth needed to truly foster team growth and development. While they provide a surface-level overview of an employee’s performance, they’re often too broad to support meaningful career development plans. And let's be honest, you and your team hate doing them. Too much time invested with little to return.

To address this, I reimagined our approach a few years ago and implemented a more personalized self-assessment process, tailored specifically to each team member’s role and career trajectory. Does it require more effort? Absolutely. Is it worth the investment? Without a doubt!

This assessment process focuses on the actual responsibilities tied to the job title, future career pathing, and evaluates not only skill mastery but also employee interest. By combining these factors, building development plans becomes a clear, actionable process.
